Recent conversations amongst futures and foresight practitioners from across Australia suggest that the time is ripe to establish a national Foresight Community of Practice, under the auspices of The Centre for Australian Foresight’s “AusForesight” professional development program.
To gauge broader interest in this initiative, we are holding simultaneous events in Sydney, Melbourne and on the Sunshine Coast on Friday 2 August, from 5:45pm for a 6pm start, finishing at 7pm. Our aim is to have video links between the three venues.
The events will take the form of a conversation on “The futures of futurists.” The topic is prompted by Catherine Armitage’s recent article in the Sydney Morning Herald, “Grappling with the day after tomorrow: Futurists are struggling with mixed fortunes in their field of commerce”, and responses from Paul Higgins and Richard Slaughter.
Venues are as follows:
- Melbourne—Swinburne University of Technology, Hawthorn, room BA911 (this is the building immediately to the north of the library) (hosted by Peter Hayward)
- Sydney—University of Technology Sydney, Institute for Sustainable Futures Boardroom, Level 11, UTS Building 10, 235 Jones Street Ultimo (hosted by Chris Riedy)
- Sunshine Coast—University of Sunshine Coast, C1.49 Tutorial Room (hosted by Marcus Bussey)
We invite you to join us at one of these locations. For anyone not able to be with us on this occasion, we’re aiming for this to be the first of many—please stay tuned for future announcements. Whether or not you’re able to make it to this one, you can register interest here (please state subject as “Foresight COP” and indicate your location). Participants are asked to prepare by reading the SMH article and responses linked above.
